Who Started It All?

Postby abominus » Fri Mar 14, 2008 10:51 pm

This is something that just popped into my head after listening to hours and hours of cds by Jessy, Milk Inc., Lasgo, Kate Ryan etc......

Who was the *first* woman that emerged into the Belgian Dance scene? What woman started the *WHOLE* thing?

This should be a very interesting thread 8)

Looking forward to your replies!

I think Ya Kid Kay, who sang "Pump up the jam" by Technotronic.

She now sings urban & African based music...

Is "Castles in the sky" a cover? Who is this girl, Marsha? I tried to find this song, but I couldn´t :(

No no :P ! Castles in the Sky isn't a cover. Marsha was the first singer of Ian Van Dahl and the one who wrote Castles in the Sky  If you want to listen her version search for Castles in the Sky - Ian Van Dahl feat. Marsha  I love the Annemie's version but this one is better 8)

I agree with Gino Lebrun that Marsha with Castles In The Sky was the person that really opened up this kind of music for the masses.

Back in the time before Castles there were Kathleen Goossens, singer of Astroline and later on Orion Too.

Karine Boelaerts should not be forgotten. Although she never apperared at the stage, she was the voice behind several of Milk Ink:s best songs (From Inside of Me to Walk On Water).
In my opinion Promise with the voice of Karine Boelaerts is the absolute Milk Inc masterpiece and Promise was not even released as a single.
"Time has the answers, Time will make me strong" Wow thats cute!

One step back, to http://www.dancevibes.be/artists/artists.jsp there is a lot of interest to read about different singers. Its a sad sign of the time that dancevibes.be updates very seldom.

"Walk On Water" was not by Linda?! Okay, that's news to me.

I will do more investigating on the dancevibes Artists page. I do think that they need to update their pages more often. Some of the info there has not been updated for many many years.

Thanks for the info!

i think that the band that started the belgian-progressive-dance was 2 fabiola with his first hits like "play this song", "freak out" and "lift u up".

later there were 2 songs that consolidated that style: "in my eyes" from milk inc and "secret" from abssolom.
"castles in the sky" from ian van dahll feat. marsha was later

It's really hard to say where it all started, everything started when people started to make sound... modern music is just an evolution. I personally think the Belgian scene is the next evolution of the "Dutch" eurodance in the early 90's; 2 Brothers on the 4th floor, 2 Unlimited, etc.

But i don't think the real Belgian scene started that commercial, it all started "underground", in the clubs. Milk Inc, Absolom, 2 Fabiola... they all started with club hits that got transformed to commercial songs when they got popular. But to name a name, i would say Milk Inc was the artist that "started it all", 1995/1996, they were simply the first...

The first "solo" promoted woman was Jessy in her Mackenzie feat Jessy period though, in my opinion. Milk Inc was earlier, but they didn't have that female front singer image like Jessy did. Also (Mackenzie ft.) Jessy was more popular worldwide than Milk Inc was, i think she influenced the Belgian dance image more worldwide.

I do agree with the whole Jessy issue of your post. I do wish that she would be noticed more. To me, her -Rain- album was excellent. It's not the same *thud-thud-thud/4 on the floor* beats in every song. There's variety in there. I am not sure who is producing her new album but I hope that it is not Mickey Modelle. That "Show Me Heaven" single was sloppy. There is no vibe there.

I wish that dancevibes.be would update their whole -Artists- pages. Yes, you can find some info there but some of this stuff is like, almost 10 years old :(

I think I have 2 Unlimited's albums around here somewhere.

Thanks for your input!

Do not forget Fiocco and Scoop from Jan Vervloet & Co.

Fiocco released in 1998 an album "Free".

It is bad luck that Jan Vervloet & Co are not interested anymore in making good belgian dance music.

Wow, I didn't know 2 Unlimited was Belgian. Its interesting that Belgium seems to have most of the really good dance music. Twilight Zone is very well known in the US. Not that many people can name it but just about everyone has heard it played at some sports game.

(1) 2 Unlimited was half Belgian/half Dutch. The singers were from the Netherlands while the producers were from Belgium.

(2) In the mid 80's there was a style of music named "Electronic Body Music". At the end of the 80's, a new style of music emerged, the New Beat. This style only remained for 2 years. From then on (+/- 1989), groups like Praga Khan and the Lords of Acid emerged and became very popular! A couple of years later, belgian house was born as we still hear today.

The new beat was famous in Belgium by the group The Confetti's. Their best well-know singel "The Sound Of C"

Also a classic club tune by 101 pres. Electric Dream: Rock To The Beat (XTC)
